Shaibu arrived in Rwanda on October 18 for a six-day official visit expected to end on October 23, 2026.
On Monday, October 19, he visited the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) headquarters in Kigali, where he met senior military officials, including Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Mubarakh Muganga, and Army Chief, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi.
The meetings provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss ways of building on their existing military partnership, particularly in training, defence and security.
Speaking to journalists after the talks, Shaibu said the two countries had agreed to strengthen the implementation of existing cooperation agreements, including arrangements for military training and the exchange of instructors and technical experts in military equipment.
He said the discussions were aimed at further strengthening the relationship between the two countries’ armed forces.
As part of his visit, Shaibu and his delegation also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where they paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The delegation later visited the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, which documents the Rwanda Patriotic Army’s struggle to stop the genocide.
The visit reflects ongoing efforts by Rwanda and Nigeria to build closer military ties, share experience and strengthen cooperation in areas of common interest.
