The ceremony took place on October 19, 2026, at Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan’s official palace, formally confirming Muhizi’s role as Rwanda’s representative to the Southeast Asian nation.
Muhizi is based in Singapore, where he serves as Rwanda’s ambassador. He also represents the country in Australia and New Zealand.
Rwanda and Brunei established diplomatic relations in December 2020. Both countries are members of the Commonwealth, providing a platform for engagement and cooperation on issues of shared interest.
Their relationship gained further visibility in June 2022, when President Paul Kagame met Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda. The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest. The Sultan was accompanied by his son, Prince Abdul Mateen.
Brunei has a population of just over 455,000 and is among Southeast Asia’s wealthier countries. Its economy relies heavily on oil and natural gas exports, which contribute significantly to national income.
The country also earns returns from investments abroad, largely managed through the Brunei Investment Agency under the Ministry of Finance.
Muhizi’s appointment to represent Rwanda in Brunei provides an opportunity for the two countries to build on their diplomatic relations and explore areas of cooperation that could benefit both nations.
