Flydubai flight diverts to Saudi Arabia after pilots reportedly fight

A Flydubai passenger plane travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after the two pilots reportedly got into a physical fight in the cockpit, Israeli media reported.

The flight left Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates in the morning carrying around 150 passengers, most of them Israeli citizens.

About two hours into the journey, the aircraft sent an emergency signal, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24.

The signal was briefly changed to a code used to indicate a hijacking before being changed back to a general emergency alert.

Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office said there was no indication that the plane had been hijacked.

Israeli media, citing defence officials, reported that the emergency signal may have been triggered by a confrontation between the captain and co-pilot that escalated into a physical altercation.

Instead of continuing to Israel, the aircraft was diverted and landed at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. It had originally been scheduled to land at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.

The incident also prompted Israel’s air force to send fighter jets to assist, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held urgent discussions with officials about the situation.

Details about what led to the reported fight between the pilots were not immediately clear.

The incident caused concern among passengers and authorities, but there was no immediate report of injuries or a security threat to the aircraft.
