Rwanda earns $10.9 Million from farm and livestock exports in five days

Rwanda earned about $10.9m from exporting agricultural and livestock products in five days, with coffee bringing in the largest share of the revenue, according to the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB).

Between September 21 and 25, the country shipped 8,527 tonnes of products to international markets, generating 15.45 billion Rwandan francs ($10.9m).

Coffee accounted for $4.36m of the earnings, with 635 tonnes exported during the period.

Tea was the second-largest agricultural export by value, generating $668,935 from 217 tonnes. Vegetable exports brought in $373,039 from 367 tonnes.

Rwanda also shipped 457 tonnes of fruit worth $455,706, while 12 tonnes of flowers generated $85,944.

Livestock products added another $441,188 to export earnings from 320 tonnes shipped during the week.

A wide range of other products made up most of the export volume, totalling 6,519 tonnes and generating $4.07m, NAEB said.

The products were sold across a range of markets, including China, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Belgium, South Africa, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the United States, as well as other African countries.

For Rwanda, the figures underline the importance of agriculture not only as a source of livelihoods but also as an increasingly important source of export revenue, particularly through products such as coffee, tea, horticulture and livestock.
