Rwanda Court Keeps Six Suspects in Custody Over Alleged National Exam Cheating

Rwanda’s Nyamabuye Primary Court has ordered Muhanga District’s head of education and five co-accused to remain in pre-trial detention over alleged forgery and examination malpractice linked to a local school.

The ruling was delivered on 15 October 2026 by Nyamabuye Primary Court after prosecutors asked for the suspects to remain in custody as the case proceeds.

All six suspects have denied the charges and asked to be released while awaiting trial.

The education official and five co-accused were arrested on 18 September 2026 over alleged offences linked to Collège Saint Jean, a school in Muhanga District.

During a hearing on 8 October, prosecutors said the education official faces charges of disclosing official secrets, abusing his authority for personal gain, and forging or using forged documents.

The five other suspects are accused of forging documents or using documents believed to be fake.

Prosecutors argued that the suspects should remain in custody as the legal process continues. The defence, however, maintained that they should be allowed to await trial outside detention.

The court’s decision means the six will remain in custody for now. The allegations have yet to be determined by a trial, and all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
