Rwandans Take Bigger Share of Rwanda’s Capital Market

Rwandans are taking a growing role in the country’s capital market, now accounting for 77% of participation in the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE), as the number of people opening investment accounts reaches 300,000.

The figures were announced in Rubavu District on October 28, 2026, during the Capital Markets Roadshows 2026, a campaign organised by the Capital Market Authority (CMA) to encourage more individuals and businesses to explore investment opportunities on the stock exchange.

David Mitari, Operations Manager at the Rwanda Stock Exchange, said the past three years had seen a significant shift, with Rwandans increasingly taking up opportunities that were previously dominated by foreign investors.

He said foreign investors had once accounted for around 60% of participation in the market, but Rwandans have since taken the lead.

“When you look at how participation is shifting from foreign investors to Rwandans, you can see that things are moving in the right direction. Rwandans now account for more than 77% of participation in our market, and more people are opening investment accounts,” Mitari said.

According to Mitari, the change reflects a growing awareness among Rwandans that investing in the stock market is not just for wealthy people or foreigners. More people are beginning to see it as an opportunity to grow their money and benefit from the performance of businesses.

He encouraged Rwandans to learn more about how the capital market works and consider the opportunities available to them.

So far, about 300,000 Rwandans have opened accounts that allow them to invest through the stock exchange.

Through shares and bonds, investors can put their money into businesses and other investment opportunities rather than relying solely on traditional savings.

The growing local participation marks a shift in Rwanda’s investment landscape, as more citizens begin to explore ways of building their wealth through the capital market.
